MESA, Ariz. — A crash near an East Valley freeway has left one person dead and seven people hospitalized on Sunday morning, according to the Mesa Police Department.

The crash occurred near State Route 24 and Signal Butte Road. The crash involved two vehicles, police said.

One of the vehicles, a van, had 10 people in it.

Eight people were taken to the hospital. One person has died at the scene, police said.

Please avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Around 1:45 p.m. on May 24, Mesa PD said the eastbound lanes of SR-24 are open, and they hope to open the rest in the next couple of hours.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
