WASHINGTON — Certain batches of a popular cheese bread sold at major grocery stores are being recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall notice for Motor City Pizza Co.’s 5 Cheese Bread. The cheese breads were made with milk powder that was recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.
Several other brands have had to recall products over the past several weeks because of a milk powder recall issued by California Dairies Inc.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Those who are healthy can also experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, salmonella infections can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
Champion Foods LLC said the recalled milk powder was used in a seasoning blend provided by a third-party manufacturer that goes in the cheese bread. There have been no reports of injuries or illnesses related to the recall, according to the FDA alert.

The recalled cheese breads were sold nationwide at retailers including Costco, Walmart, Giant Landover, Grocery Outlet, Jewel, Kroger, Schnucks, Target, C&S, Bozzuto’s, Brookshire Grocery, Meijer, Food City, KeHe, Lipari, Publix, Merchants Dis Hickory, PDI/Hy-Vee, River Valley, SpartanNash, Supervalu and UNFI.
The manufacturer said it tested the seasoning blends, and they came back negative, but is doing a recall “out of an abundance of caution for the safety of customers.”
The sell-by date is printed in black inside the cheese bread image on the front of the pizza.
