PHOENIX — Waymo is allowing Phoenix residents the chance to test out the company’s new fleet of bigger, self-driving cars.

The Ojai model being debuted by Waymo is notably larger than the white autonomous cars that can be seen moving throughout the Valley. The cars have “elevator-like” doors that slide open similar to a minivan.

Waymo said the Ojai cars are meant to feel like a “living room on wheels.” The cars were designed with a low step and flat floor that will make it easier for passengers to enter and exit from.

The arrival of Ojai in the desert marks a notable progression of Waymo’s presence in the Valley after the company has spent years offering customers rides in its recognizable autonomous cars.

Select riders in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles will have the option to take free rides in an Ojai vehicle before Waymo introduces the vehicles to Denver, San Diego and Las Vegas.
