The shooting happened northeast of Benson, Arizona, on May 25. At approximately 8 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol trooper was conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 10 and saw a Cadillac SUV driving 95 miles per hour in a 75-mile-per-hour zone, DPS said in a news release.

The driver, later identified as Berkleigh Jade Bond, gave the trooper a fake name. When the trooper asked Bond to step out of the vehicle to be taken into custody for fictitious license plates, providing a false identity, and extraditable felony warrants, Bond allegedly resisted arrest.

The trooper then deployed his taser, but Bond ran back to her vehicle, DPS said. Bond continued to resist arrest, and before the trooper could regain control, Bond began to drive with the trooper partially hanging out of the vehicle.

The trooper then fired at Bond, and she later died at the scene.

DPS said the trooper involved had 28 years of law enforcement experience, and he did sustain injuries during the incident. He is recovering at home, DPS said.
