WASHINGTON \u2014 The man who opened fire near the White House on Saturday was shot and killed by law enforcement, according to the U.S. Secret Service.<\/p>\n

Shortly after 6 p.m., a man near a White House security checkpoint pulled a weapon out of his bag and began firing, according to a news release issued by Secret Service.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, was shot during the confrontation with Secret Service agents and was brought to a nearby hospital, where he later died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

One bystander was shot during the incident, which happened shortly after 6 p.m. Eastern. They were listed in critical condition Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

President Donald Trump was in the White House at the time of the shooting, but authorities said nobody there was impacted, and no law enforcement members were injured during the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It’s the third shooting incident in close proximity to the president within a month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The White House went into a temporary lockdown that has since been lifted. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

According to court documents, Best had previous run-ins with law enforcement on at least two occasions and reportedly struggled with mental health challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

According to District of Columbia court records, Best was arrested in July 2025 after he attempted to enter a different White House checkpoint without authorization, didn\u2019t heed officers\u2019 commands to stop, \u201cclaimed he was Jesus Christ\u201d and said he wanted to be arrested.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

An initial hearing was held and a \u201cPretrial Stay Away Order\u201d was issued, typically a measure ordering a defendant not to go near a person or area before a trial. A bench warrant was issued in August after a notice of \u201cnoncompliance\u201d against Best, who did appear for a subsequent hearing.<\/p>\n
