{"id":1103,"date":"2026-05-26T06:04:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T06:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=1103"},"modified":"2026-05-26T06:04:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T06:04:23","slug":"coroner-identifies-woman-killed-by-airborne-umbrella-at-south-carolina-restaurant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=1103","title":{"rendered":"Coroner identifies woman killed by airborne umbrella at South Carolina restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. \u2014 A coroner identified the woman who died after being hit by an airborne umbrella during strong winds at a South Carolina restaurant Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=1101\">\u2018He lived for his kids\u2019 | Family of Colorado man who died on Manitou Incline remembers him as loving dad<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell said 56-year-old Dana Weigner of Huger died after suffering a neck injury during what officials are calling a tragic accident.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>According to Blackwell, Clarendon County dispatch received a call just after 7:30 p.m. reporting an unresponsive woman at Driftwood Grill on Lake Marion after sudden strong winds caused an umbrella to strike her.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis is not an everyday occurrence,&#8221; Blackwell said. &#8220;This is just one of those tragic things that happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When first responders arrived, officials said they found Weigner with injuries to her head and neck. EMS crews attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but she could not be revived.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Driftwood Grill, home of the Lazy Gator, is near Palmetto Shores Campground on Lake Marion.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Blackwell said officials are reviewing weather data from Saturday night alongside emergency managers to better understand the conditions at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=1098\">Sonny Rollins, saxophonist and restless genius of jazz, dead at 95<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a strong, strong wind, like a microburst that came through and knocked not just the umbrella, it knocked all of the furniture and other debris came onto where they were sitting,\u201d Blackwell said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Officials said Weigner was dining with her husband and other family members when the incident happened.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIt was very emotional for him, and I spoke with the owners of the restaurant, and they say all the family members were gathered there as well,&#8221; Blackwell said. &#8220;They were there eating, dining, they had a large crowd.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Restaurant owners told News 19 they did not want to speak on camera out of respect for the family, but said grief counseling has been offered to staff, family members and the community.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a statement following the incident, the restaurant said:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>\u201cOur hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night\u2019s sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion. This has deeply affected many people in our community, including guests, staff, first responders, and everyone involved. Out of respect for the family and those impacted, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and privacy during this incredibly difficult time. We are grateful for the emergency personnel and community members who responded and assisted during the situation.
