WASHINGTON \u2014 Two zoo employees were hospitalized after they were reportedly attacked by wolves on Wednesday inside an enclosure at a northwest Indiana zoo.<\/p>\n

WTHR reports that according to the Michigan City Police Department and the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department, the incident began on Tuesday night, June 2, after a wolf died from natural causes at the Washington Park Zoo.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Following that wolf’s death, an “incident” occurred involving other wolves and members of the animal care staff on June 3.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Officials said all individuals involved in the incident are in stable condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

NBC affiliate WNDU reported that two zookeepers were attacked by two wolves inside an exhibit at the zoo. NBC Chicago reported\u00a0that a 39-year-old employee was attacked by one of the wolves, suffering bite marks to her neck and limbs before she was able to escape.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

WNDU reports that the Michigan City Fire Department found a woman outside of the enclosure with “severe injuries” and at least four bite wounds to her neck and limbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second zookeeper was found inside the enclosure with a wolf and was reportedly suffering from a “less severe” bite wound to the forearm, according to WNDU.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

NBC Chicago said that the second zookeeper had been able to climb onto the roof of a building inside the enclosure. Firefighters reportedly had to “carefully navigate” getting the zookeeper out of the enclosure while using a ladder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The zoo remained open on Wednesday but the main wolf exhibit was closed while staff monitored the animals and continued to assess the situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
