WASHINGTON \u2014 Taylor Swift’s original song for the “Toy Story 5” soundtrack has arrived, and it’s a return to an earlier era for the music superstar.<\/p>\n

“I Knew It, I Knew You” was released on Swift’s YouTube channel and music streaming platforms at midnight early Friday morning, garnering more than 300,000 YouTube views within four hours. With its banjo and harmonica, the song is a rare country release from the singer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Rumors about the song had swirled for over a month after a countdown timer with a blue sky and cloud background reminiscent of Andy’s bedroom in “Toy Story” appeared on Swift’s website for about 10 minutes in April. Quick to sift through tea leaves for their beloved singer, Swifties deduced that she likely had a song on the new movie’s soundtrack. Even more fortuitous is the movie’s U.S. release date, June 19, exactly 20 years to the day from the release of Swift’s debut single “Tim McGraw.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Swift teamed up with producer Jack Antonoff for the track, which has been marketed as a tribute to the franchise’s feisty cowgirl, Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, with the character’s sheriff badge and red braided hair adorning the song’s artwork.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Accompanying the song was an Instagram post by Swift, featuring a home video of the superstar as a child, dressed in a red cowboy hat and boots. Not far off from the wardrobe of the song’s cartoon muse, Jessie. Swift said she has been a fan of the Toy Story franchise since the first movie was released in 1995, when it became the first full-length computer-animated film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once,” Swift said. “And being a ‘Toy Story’ kid from the age of five ’til now … is an adventure, I plan to be on to infinity and beyond.”\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

It’s the first country song from Swift, arguably since “Betty” off of 2020’s “Folklore.” Swift notably shifted from country to exclusively pop and folk music during the 2010s, after early crossover success with acoustic ballads like “Teardrops on My Guitar” and “Love Story.”\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The song could be an opportunity for the 36-year-old phenomenon to unlock a new achievement — her first Oscar nomination. Each “Toy Story” movie has had one of its songs nominated for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. Although Swift might have to compete with another musical sensation, Randy Newman, who will also be featured on the Toy Story 5 soundtrack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Although Swift’s musical impact has been inescapable, her contributions to the movie industry have been more low-key. Most recently, Swift had an original song, “Carolina,” appear on the soundtrack for 2022’s “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an adaptation of the Delia Owens murder mystery novel starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. Her original music has also appeared in 2012’s “The Hunger Games” and the 2017 sequel “Fifty Shades Darker.” And of course, 2019’s “Cats,” where the feline-loving singer starred as the red-coated Bombalurina.\u00a0<\/p>\n
