WASHINGTON \u2014 A second wave of payments tied to a Facebook class action settlement may be on the way for some users.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the settlement administrator’s website, a court approved a second distribution of payouts in early May. Payments begin in June and will continue for approximately one month.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Some users have already received emails about the upcoming payments. Only those who cashed their initial settlement checks will be eligible for the second round. Recipients will receive an email notice three to four days before payment is issued, with the first checks expected June 9.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The first wave of settlement checks were distributed in September 2025, with users getting $30 on average.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Why is there a second payout?<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

According to the settlement website, the second wave of payout was approved by the court to redistribute “uncashed funds” from the initial settlement to class members who successfully cashed their initial payment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Facebook settlement payment sizes revealed: How much will I get?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

During the first wave, the average payment amount for Facebook users who signed up for the class action settlement and were approved was approximately $29.43.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The court documents stated the maximum payout was $38.26 and the minimum amount is $4.89.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

It is unknown how much could come from the second distribution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

How do I know if I’m getting a payment?<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
\n

If you’ve been approved for a payment, you’ll receive an email from “Facebook User Privacy Settlement Administrator” via the email address donotreply@facebookuserprivacysettlement.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The subject of those emails are “Facebook User Privacy Settlement – Notice of Upcoming Settlement Payment.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

How did they determine how much each person gets?<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

According to the settlement website, payment amounts are determined by a point system. Each eligible claimant receives one point for every month they had an active Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022. The net settlement fund is then divided by the total number of points across all claimants, and each person’s payment reflects the value of their individual points \u2014 meaning the longer you were on Facebook during the class period, the larger your share.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Why is Facebook paying users?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Facebook reached the settlement in 2023 to end a lawsuit brought after it was revealed that the company had sold customer data for millions of users to be fed to Cambridge Analytica, a firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The case sprang from 2018 revelations that Cambridge Analytica had paid a Facebook app developer for access to the personal information of about 87 million users of the platform. That data was then used to target U.S. voters during the 2016 campaign that culminated in Trump’s election as the 45th president.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Angeion, the company handling the settlement, confirmed that payments have commenced with a statement on the website homepage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Pursuant to the Court’s Order dated August 27, 2025, the distribution of settlement benefits has commenced and will continue for approximately 10 weeks. We thank you in advance for your patience,” the statement read.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Members of the class action have begun receiving emails telling them that their payments are on their way, with the emails appearing to come in batches every week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Who should expect money from the Facebook settlement?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
\n

Anyone in the U.S. who had a Facebook account at any time between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022 was eligible to receive a payment if they filed a claim. The deadline to submit a claim ended in Aug. 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
