OXON HILL, Md. \u2014 A United States Marine veteran says his military training helped him survive after four teens allegedly attempted to rob him at gunpoint outside his home in Maryland.<\/p>\n

The confrontation, which was captured on video, remains under investigation by the Prince George’s County Police Department.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Jheyco Borda said he was working on his truck when four teens approached him and demanded his phone, truck keys and other valuables.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“The guy just came at me, pointed the gun in my face, told me, ‘Give me the keys,'” Borda said. “I said the car is on, take it.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Borda said he does not use traditional keys and instead unlocks and starts his truck using his phone. As he held up the phone to access the vehicle, he noticed the armed suspect briefly look away.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“By that point, he took the gun away from my head, and that’s when I grabbed the gun,” Borda said. Video shows Borda wrestling with the armed teen while three other teens stand nearby.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

What happened next unfolded in seconds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“We are trained to fight or flight and it was my instinct in a split second,” Borda said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Borda’s brother, Peter, heard the commotion and ran to help. During the struggle, the teen fired a shot. Borda said the bullet luckily missed both him and his brother, hitting the truck instead.<\/p>\n

“We are trained in weapons safety,” the Marine veteran said. “That’s one of the first things we learn.”\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Borda served in the United States Marine Corps and credits that training with helping him react under pressure. “Every split second counts a lot, and they teach us that in there,” Borda said of his military service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

After gaining control of the gun, Borda said his father, Pedro, and brother helped restrain the suspects until Prince George’s County police officers arrived.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

According to police, all of the suspects have been identified. The case remains an active investigation, and the department is consulting with the State’s Attorney’s Office regarding potential charges.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“It was either they do it then, or I try to fight for my life,” Borda said. He believes the teen could have shot him and taken the truck.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Although he is grateful to have survived, Borda said he would not recommend others take the same action. “I wouldn’t encourage anyone else to do that,” he said. “I am lucky, I guess.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Borda said he hopes the teens involved learn from the experience and make better choices moving forward.<\/p>\n
