GRAND RAPIDS, Mich \u2014 A beloved Michigan teen known for her positive attitude, humor and kindness has lost her five-year battle with brain cancer.<\/p>

Annika “Anni” Meier, 17, died Tuesday, May 5. Along with recurrent cancer, she battled posterior fossa syndrome and radiation necrosis.<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

She was laid to rest on Thursday morning.<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

While she was diagnosed at age 12 and was bombarded with appointments, surgeries and some unpleasant procedures, Anni was known for remaining cheerful and smiling at her doctors and nurses no matter what.<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Her obituary describes her as “a decorated ski racer, passionate soccer player, avid reader, lover of animals and babies, so very happy when outdoors taking in nature \u2014 fishing, swimming, kayaking or savoring a slice of watermelon while rocking in a chair on the deck.”<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

She loved music, dogs, traveling, Michigan football and keeping her brothers “in line.” Her family said her “joyful, sweet and hilarious” golden retriever Tucker brought her so much laughter and love over the years.<\/p>

“She was the light of many lives, a source of hope and encouragement for so many, offering sass (\u201cSassy Sissy\u201d), hilarity (\u201cdur\u201d) and a warm smile even in the toughest of times. She was a warrior and an eternal optimist, unapologetically confident that she would win the battle. Her manners were impeccable and she had heartfelt empathy for those on their own cancer journey and their caregivers,” her obituary reads.<\/p> <\/div>\n

Anni and her family created a nonprofit to help other families during pediatric brain cancer treatment. Called Anni’s Army, the foundation focuses on research but also provides help with mortgages, rent, utility payments, car payments and more through the Anni’s Gift program.<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

In her obituary, her family thanked the caregivers, doctors and nurses that they met during Anni’s battle.<\/p> <\/div>\n

“When you see a rainbow, a snowflake, a puppy or a baby, think fondly of our girl because she will be thinking fondly of you!” they wrote.<\/p>
