WASHINGTON \u2014 The Oklahoma attorney general announced he was suing the computer game Roblox on Thursday for “endangering children,” becoming the 12th U.S. state attorney general to do so. \u00a0<\/p>

Inside Attorney General Gentner Drummond charged that an “international Satanic cult” had been using the site and exploiting children through grooming, sextortion and even murder. Another section, focused on a 12-year-old girl who had been coerced into sending explicit pictures to a man in his 40s while using the website.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Meanwhile, Drummond said, Roblox had been advertising to parents that the site was safe to use.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\u201cRoblox marketed itself as a safe place for children but turned a blind eye as predators targeted and exploited minors on its platform,\u201d Drummond said on Thursday. \u201cIt failed to implement adequate safeguards, failed to protect young users and failed to be honest with parents about the risks.”\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Launched in 2006, Roblox’s popularity was accelerated by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when users flocked to the site to create their own personalized games inside the platform. The site has since been banned in many parts of the world, including China, Russia, Turkey and Egypt.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

According to Roblox’s terms of service, most recently updated in April following $12 million settlement with the state of Nevada, users can select a “content maturity rating,” which regulates what they might encounter on the site. These categories range from minimal to restricted or they can opt for an “unrated” experience. Users under 13, do not have the option to select an unrated experience, according to the site. \u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Roblox has also vowed to implement a facial age estimation software that will limit users’ chats to those in similar age groups. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said changes to site security will continue to roll out through the summer.<\/p>

“As part of our ongoing work to strengthen user protections, Roblox recently became the first online gaming platform to require age checks for all users to access chat features so that younger users are limited to chatting only with peers by default,” Kaufman said on Friday. “Additionally, this June, we will launch new age-based accounts that automatically place our youngest users in a partitioned environment, further aligning content access and parental controls with a user\u2019s age.”\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

Louisiana was the first state to sue Roblox in August 2025, with Attorney General Liz Murrill accusing the company of child sex exploitation.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Of the 12 lawsuits, three — Alabama, Nevada and West Virginia — have been settled. Nevada, where Roblox is based, was the only state out of the group whose complaint was filed by a Democratic attorney general. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, an independent, has also sued Roblox.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson launched a criminal investigation into Roblox in December 2025.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n

\n

Roblox’s Kaufman said he looked forward to working with Drummond, “to help keep kids safe online.”<\/p> <\/div>\n

“When we identify violations of our rules, we take swift action and work closely with law enforcement to help hold bad actors accountable,” Kaufman said.<\/p>
