{"id":587,"date":"2026-05-17T06:03:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T06:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=587"},"modified":"2026-05-17T06:03:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T06:03:49","slug":"valley-teens-get-waymo-rides-to-paid-internships-in-boys-girls-clubs-pilot-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=587","title":{"rendered":"Valley teens get Waymo rides to paid internships in Boys &#038; Girls Clubs pilot program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>PHOENIX \u2014 Getting to a job can be just as hard as landing one \u2014 especially for teenagers in the Phoenix metro area.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=585\">More than 150,000 electric kettles recalled over burn risks<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Extreme heat, spread-out neighborhoods and limited late-night transit options leave many Valley teens dependent on parents or public transportation that doesn\u2019t always reach where they need to go.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest barriers we find&#8230; we hear from our kids and our families, is transportation,\u201d said Josh Stine, VP of External Affairs for Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of the Valley. \u201cIf their parents can\u2019t get them there, and maybe the bus isn\u2019t working, or they can\u2019t get access to the light rail, it limits opportunities to take internships.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Now, BGCAZ is doing something about it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of the Valley just launched the AZYouthforce Workforce Mobility Pilot in Phoenix, pairing up to 40 teens with autonomous Waymo rides to and from paid summer internships, at no cost to participants.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The program taps into Waymo\u2019s teen accounts feature, launched in Phoenix last year, which allows riders as young as 14 to travel independently once a parent links their account.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>From there, teens can hail fully self-driving rides across more than 300 square miles of the Valley on their own.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For intern Genesis Sabinon, the prospect is both a relief and a thrill.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBoth of my parents work, so it would definitely be stressful,\u201d she said. \u201cBut now, not only am I not stressed out, but my parents are not stressed out. I don\u2019t have to worry about transportation, so it\u2019s all good.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>She\u2019s been on a Waymo before.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201c\u2026and it\u2019s pretty cool, honestly\u2026 no driver or anything,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing able to listen to your music and everything\u2026 That\u2019s the best part.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Before the rides began, teens and their parents went through safety training, set up the Waymo app, and took a ride together in a fully autonomous vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/scottsdalemovinghub.com\/?p=582\">Congo Ebola outbreak declared a public health emergency of \u2018international concern\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Intern Lylah Peterson said the hands-on orientation made all the difference.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI feel very safe. They explained it really well \u2014 all the features that are designed to get us there safely,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Her mother, Jessica Peterson, couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great opportunity. Not having to worry about the safety and whatnot \u2014 it\u2019s worth its weight in gold,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just so convenient for working mothers, like myself, this is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>And it\u2019s more than a ride; it\u2019s a research study.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The eight-week pilot, funded by the Springs Legacy Institute, is also designed as a formal research study.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Some interns will use Waymo, while others rely on the bus passes and light rail already provided by the clubs.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>An independent evaluator will track how transportation access affects attendance, punctuality, family stress, and long-term workforce outcomes \u2014 with the goal of determining whether autonomous vehicle access can meaningfully expand opportunity for underserved youth.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Researchers hope the findings will serve as a replicable model for other cities facing similar transit challenges.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For Lylah Peterson, the bottom line is simple.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll definitely be able to get to work on time.
