PEORIA, Ariz. \u2014 With just a couple of days before Memorial Day weekend, Maricopa County officials are reminding Arizonans how to stay safe by the lakefront.<\/p>\n

Maricopa County Supervisor Thomas Galvin hosted his fourth annual “Lake and Trail Safety Event” at Lake Pleasant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Galvin said Lake Pleasant sees more than 1.6 million visitors every year.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“We want to make sure that people are safe,” Supervisor Galvin said. “Not just [on] Memorial Day weekend, but throughout the entire summer. Unfortunately, one drowning death is one too many. We had 13 last summer, so I want to raise awareness.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Galvin encourages people to wear a life jacket.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Everyone should be wearing a life jacket, especially when you’re on a boat,” Galvin said. “Make sure the jacket feels nice and firm. Make sure it’s nice and snug. Also, make sure when you pull it up that it doesn’t come over your ears. That’s how you know that you have a life vest that works, and that it’s good for you.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The Maricopa County Supervisor said the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hand out life jackets to visitors at Lake Pleasant if they forget to bring one.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Another safety recommendation: have your pets wear a life jacket.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Make sure they’re brightly colored,” Galvin said. “Also, if your pet goes in the water, make sure you clean them up. You want their coat to be nice and healthy. Don’t let your pets drink the water here in the lake. Make sure you bring water for your pets.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Galvin said if you’re going to drink at the lake, do it responsibly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Make sure you’re safe on water,” Galvin said. “Do not use alcohol when you’re on a boat. The [Maricopa] County Sheriff’s Office is here at all times, making sure people are safe. We want everyone to have a good time.”<\/p>\n

How big is Maricopa County? <\/u><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Maricopa County is the United States\u2019 4th largest county in terms of population with 4,485,414 people, according to the 2020 Census.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The county contains around 63% of Arizona\u2019s population and is 9,224 square miles. That makes the county larger than seven U.S. states (Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire).\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

One of the largest park systems in the nation is also located in Maricopa County. The county has an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks that includes hundreds of miles of trails, nature centers and campgrounds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The county\u2019s seat is located in Phoenix, which is also the state capital and the census-designated 5th most populous city in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n
