HOUSTON \u2014 A deputy in Harris County, Texas, is recovering after investigators said he was shot in a random drive-by while sleeping in his bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a rough road, but I\u2019m doing good. I\u2019m holding in,\u201d said Deputy Augustine Arellano.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Arellano said the shooting happened April 25, when he and his family were home. He said they heard a vehicle drive by and then multiple gunshots.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe could hear the vehicle coming down the road and then just pop, pop, pop, pop, pop \u2026 like they were close,\u201d Arellano said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

A bullet went through the family\u2019s bedroom, he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAs I picked my head up, I saw it hit me \u2026 and saw my stomach swell up,” he said. “I knew I got shot.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

He said he saw blood and that his daughter began screaming. Arellano said two of his three children were in the room and one was standing near a window.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know exactly where the bullet went \u2026 but it had to be within inches of where she was standing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Arellano\u2019s injuries included a pierced intestine and colon, and a fractured spine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shooting came as the family was dealing with earlier losses. Arellano said they remain displaced after a fire destroyed their home during the derecho nearly two years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Arellano said their rebuild was supposed to be finished last year, but the construction company asked for additional money outside the original contract.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like \u2026 we\u2019re gonna need 10 percent more \u2026 maybe $60,000 more,\u201d Arellano said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

KHOU 11 reporter Trason Bragg spoke to a co-owner of DLT Construction who said the additional cost requests were due to rising material prices and upgrade requests made by the family. The owner said he hoped to reach an agreement this weekend to finish the home.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The suspect, Rodrigo Arraiga Jr., is charged with deadly conduct and is being held on a $75,000 bond, according to the report.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
