But behind the dreams of time spent away from your desk lurks the more realistic picture of how many people are spending this season: penciling in just one more happy hour, fielding endless invites, and trying to remember what summer felt like when you were little. Surely not this overwhelming, right?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

According to ThriftBooks\u2019 Summer Reading Survey, if you\u2019re feeling this way, you\u2019re not alone: Many Americans report missing out on the slower summer seasons of their youth.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have so many activities going on,\u201d Barbara Hagen, Vice President of Marketing of ThriftBooks, told 12News in an interview. \u201cA lot of family activities or kids\u2019 camps and our schedules just don\u2019t stop in the summertime\u2026 they don\u2019t seem to take a breather at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

But if you\u2019re looking for that breather, there is hope: Picking up a good book may just be the way to reclaim that \u201cendless summer feeling you\u2019re searching for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Reading a book \u201cslows time in a way nothing else does,\u201d according to 76% of respondents to the survey, and 56% of respondents said reading \u201cmakes summer feel like it lasts longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cReading is one of the last few single-tasking activities that we do. You\u2019re not distracted, you\u2019re not multitasking when you\u2019re reading a book,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cYou\u2019re just really immersed in the story, and you\u2019re taking it page by page, and you\u2019re letting your brain and your mind just go with the flow, and you\u2019re not concerned with what time it is, or what\u2019s next on the schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

That \u201cmental exhale\u201d reading provides is backed by science, too. In a 2024 study for the American Journal of Health Behavior, reading is cited as an activity that \u201csignificantly and positively influences both the reduction of work stress and the enhancement of job satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

And people actually do read more during the summer, Hagen said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe definitely see some seasonality with summer,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cI think part of it is because the days are longer, so people feel like they have a little bit more, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

So if you\u2019re looking to read more this summer, or start a new reading habit, Hagen has a few tips.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

#1) Start small<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Saying you are going to read for an hour every day isn\u2019t just unrealistic\u2014it could also prevent you from trying in the first place. Hagen said developing a reading routine is just like establishing any other habit in life.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDon\u2019t set too many ambitious goals, because like anything in life, you want to start the habit, start small, and make some progress, and feel like you\u2019ve accomplished something to keep going,\u201d Hagen said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

#2) Incorporate reading into other already established activities in your life<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

If you normally take a coffee or lunch break during the work day, maybe bring a book with you next time. Or if you\u2019re guilty of scrolling on your phone before bed, you could swap the blue light for a good read.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cSometimes it\u2019s hard if you try to find extra space in your life to schedule reading, it might not happen,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cJust see how, where you can anchor it with other moments that make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

#3) Find a good book<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

It seems obvious, but in order to commit to reading, you\u2019ve got to find the right book! Right now, Hagen said she is seeing many page-to-screen adaptations drive sales at ThriftBooks, such as Remarkably Bright Creatures<\/em> by Shelby Van Pelt, People We Meet on Vacation<\/em> by Emily Henry, Heated Rivalry<\/em> by Rachel Reid, Project Hail<\/em>\u00a0Mary<\/em> by Andy Weir, and Off-Campus<\/em>, which is inspired by Elle Kennedy\u2019s The Deal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI love how the media of film and movies and TV shows interacts with books, and allows us to expand our horizon,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s a genre we wouldn\u2019t have picked up as a book, but when we watch it on the screen, we\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, this is really interesting, let me go read the book.\u2019 I think it\u2019s a great way to cross-pollinate each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Hagen said on her summer TBR is the book Yesteryear<\/em>, by Caro Claire Burke, a novel about a \u201ctradwife\u201d influencer who wakes up to find she has time-traveled to a 19th-century farm life that contrasts with her online persona. The book has gained a lot of popularity on social media and is a New York Times bestseller.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI’m looking forward to reading it,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cI’ve heard really good things about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

If you\u2019re looking for your next read, Hagen said she recommends searching ThriftBooks\u2019 website and checking out the titles employees recommend.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIf you type in \u2018summer reads\u2019 into the search bar, it\u2019ll take you to our human-curated set of recommendations,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cStart to explore what maybe sounds interesting, and hopefully, you pick up a book and start to have summer feel a little bit more endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

And if you do find a book you love, Hagen wants to know.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cIf someone finds a book that they love, I would love them to write to us and tell us all about it, so we can put it on our recommendation list,\u201d Hagen said. \u201cDefinitely always love to hear from people, what they’re passionate about, what book they discovered, what they’re enjoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
