PHOENIX \u2014 City pools across the Valley will open for the holiday weekend. Of course, it’s important to have fun, but it’s also a time for families to make water safety a priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For many Arizonans, the holiday weekend means sunshine, swimsuits, and splashing in the pool. It’s why Phoenix Firefighters are reminding families the importance of water safety, so a fun day doesn’t turn tragic.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Seconds really do count in these types of calls,” Captain Mike Johnson said. “We’ve had instances where people are in the pool with their children, multiple children, and they have their eyes on one child when another goes under the water. It happens that fast even with you standing right there. So that’s why you need to make sure you’re watching all children around the water. It’s probably the most important thing you can do.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The message is one that Captain Mike Johnson and his family know all too well.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“Luckily, they got to me before anything bad happened,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

It’s all because of an incident when he was two years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“We were at a family get-together at my Aunt’s house,” he said. “She had a three-foot fence around the pool, all the right things were being done. All the kids went down for a nap after lunch and the parents were eating when my mom said she had this gut instinct and feeling, where’s my son? The first place she looked was the pool and I was in the deep end.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Johnson was too young to remember it, but says it’s a story his mother always told and one he always thinks about. Especially during this time of year.<\/p>\n

“She still doesn’t know how I got out, how I got past where they were eating or how I got over the fence,” he said. “She says she doesn’t know. She’s very grateful it had a good outcome. The way she tells it, it was a chaotic scene. My mom and her sister jumped in the pool at the same time. Hearing that story growing up, it’s always been in the forefront of how easy it can happen even when doing the right things.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

It’s why he stresses the importance of adding as many layers of protection as possible: swim lessons, pool fences, locking doors and dog doors, proper life jackets, designating a water watcher and wearing a brightly colored swimsuit. It’s also important, he says, if you own a pool that you know proper CPR.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

“Layered protection,” Johnson said. “So, it’s not just having adult supervision, it’s about having barriers. Kids, if they want to get into something, somewhere they’re going to do it. So if there’s a pool, you have to be hyper-aware.”<\/p>\n
