Detectives and federal agents were actively investigating a cargo theft involving BNSF Railway when they received reports of a burglary in progress on May 29, 2026, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

BNSF personnel said several individuals were seen unloading merchandise from a stopped train and loading it into vehicles parked nearby.

Investigators located one of the suspect vehicles, a van, leaving the area and conducted a traffic stop, leading to the arrest of two people.

Later, deputies in the Williams Patrol District identified a box truck matching the description provided by train conductors traveling west on Interstate 40.

When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to pull over and eventually crashed. Two male suspects fled on foot and were not located despite a search.

Authorities estimate the value of the recovered stolen items exceeds $500,000.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the sheriff’s office says it is continuing to work with BNSF Railway and other law enforcement partners to identify and apprehend those involved.
