FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Approximately 8,000 APS customers in Arizona will have their power shut off on June 27, officials say.

Because of severe fire risk conditions, APS has decided to temporarily shut off power on Saturday as early as 10 a.m., APS said in a news release. The shutoff will impact high-fire-risk communities in the east Flagstaff and Grand Canyon areas.
Power is expected to be restored by Sunday afternoon.
“APS meteorologists and fire mitigation specialists are closely monitoring fire risk conditions that are currently predicted to intensify by this weekend due to the dry terrain, low humidity levels, high winds and topography in the area,” APS said in a release.
The purpose of a power shutoff of this scale is to help prevent electrical equipment from starting or contributing to a wildfire. If weather conditions improve, the planned safety shutoff may be canceled, APS explained.
The areas that could be impacted are:
- Doney Park
- Timberline
- Fernwood
- Mormon Lake
- Cosnino
- Sun Crater
- Fort Valley
- Walnut Canyon
- Valle
- Some east Flagstaff neighborhoods
- Tusayan
- Grand Canyon National Park, South and East rims
APS will provide advanced notifications to customers via their preferred method of communication, as listed on their account. Customers can also monitor the APS Outage Map online, as well.

Coconino County officials said the following services will be available this weekend for residents affected by the power outage:

- Saturday, June 27, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Grand Canyon/Tusayan, 1575 Shuttlebus Road, Grand Canyon Village
- Friday, June 26, 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.
- Saturday, June 27, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

If your power is shut off, APS recommends the following:
– Keep fridge and freezer doors closed to keep food and perishable items cold
– Check the APS Outage Map for ice distribution locations
– Unplug all unnecessary equipment and appliances to prevent electrical spikes
– When power is restored, wait at least five minutes after the power is turned back on to turn on major appliances and equipment
– If you see a downed line, stay 100 feet away, and call 911, and APS (800-253-9405)
Weather conditions can change, and any changes could impact restoration times if power lines or equipment are damaged or repairs are necessary.
