Meteorologists are predicting a 33-50% chance of “above normal” rain for most of the Grand Canyon State during the summer’s monsoon period.

The NWS Monsoon Outlook report estimates that the Phoenix and Tucson areas have a 37% chance of seeing above normal precipitation. Other Arizona cities leaning toward the “above normal” range include Flagstaff, Prescott, Show Low, Globe, Douglas and Nogales.

One factor tilting the odds toward greater precipitation is the presence of El Nino events expected to emerge in the Pacific Ocean this summer, according to NWS.

NWS notes there’s still a probability that these regions of Arizona could still experience normal or below normal precipitation.

On average, Phoenix sees 2.43 inches of rainfall during the monsoon period that stretches from June 15 until Sept. 30.
