WTHR reports that according to the Michigan City Police Department and the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department, the incident began on Tuesday night, June 2, after a wolf died from natural causes at the Washington Park Zoo.

Following that wolf’s death, an “incident” occurred involving other wolves and members of the animal care staff on June 3.

Officials said all individuals involved in the incident are in stable condition.

NBC affiliate WNDU reported that two zookeepers were attacked by two wolves inside an exhibit at the zoo. NBC Chicago reported that a 39-year-old employee was attacked by one of the wolves, suffering bite marks to her neck and limbs before she was able to escape.

WNDU reports that the Michigan City Fire Department found a woman outside of the enclosure with “severe injuries” and at least four bite wounds to her neck and limbs.

The second zookeeper was found inside the enclosure with a wolf and was reportedly suffering from a “less severe” bite wound to the forearm, according to WNDU.

NBC Chicago said that the second zookeeper had been able to climb onto the roof of a building inside the enclosure. Firefighters reportedly had to “carefully navigate” getting the zookeeper out of the enclosure while using a ladder.

The zoo remained open on Wednesday but the main wolf exhibit was closed while staff monitored the animals and continued to assess the situation.
