Around 8:30 p.m., police were called to a shooting at the mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road.
Early information provided by callers described shots being fired inside the mall and potential victims, police said.
Upon arrival, officers worked to secure the perimeter and the mall’s interior while shops either closed or went into lockdown, officials said.
Kevin Zamora was critically wounded and was taken to the hospital, where he later died. A 16-year-old was wounded but is expected to survive.
Multiple people were detained, but none of them was the shooter, police said.
Throughout the week, investigators learned that a suspect, a 15-year-old male, was involved in a verbal altercation with a group of people that included Zamora and the 16-year-old.
Police said during the altercation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at the group of people, killing Zamora and wounding the 16-year-old.
Through an extensive review of surveillance footage, detectives were able to identify the 15-year-old and arrest him without incident, police said.
