ADHS said they were notified of a second Arizona resident who was onboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, and this individual is now undergoing assessment and evaluation in Nebraska.

Once the second person has completed the assessment and transportation arrangements are made to ensure public health and safety, the individual will go home, and then will be monitored by their local health department.

ADHS was notified of the first Arizona resident who had been aboard the ship tied to three recent fatalities on May 5. That first Arizona resident is reportedly not symptomatic of the hantavirus, the agency said.

Other U.S. residents who had been aboard the ship and have since returned home are also being monitored, according to the New York Times.

Hantavirus typically spreads by inhaling contaminated rodent droppings.

In the summer of 2024, Coconino County reported two fatalities associated with the hantavirus.

The first hantavirus case tied to one of the ship’s passengers was confirmed on May 2 through lab testing and the World Health Organization announced it was investigating a suspected outbreak the following day, according to the Associated Press.
