On May 14, Buckeye police officers responded to reports of multiple shots being fired around 8:15 p.m. in a residential neighborhood. When officers arrived at the shooting near Miller and Warner, they found three female victims ranging in age from 16 to 20 years old.

Police later identified the victims as a pregnant 16-year-old, a pregnant 17-year-old, and a 22-year-old. The 16-year-old, identified as Rylee Montgomery, and her unborn child both died at the scene.

The 17-year-old and 22-year-old are still recovering from their injuries, and on May 20, police said the 17-year-old’s newborn child died just six days after the shooting.

On May 15, the Buckeye Police Department said a man was taken into custody in Avondale for the shooting. The man was arrested near MC-85 and Dysart Road. SWAT was called to arrest the man, police say. The U.S. Marshals and Avondale Police Department assisted.

The man was identified as Rylee’s boyfriend, 18-year-old Michael Sanchez, police said.

Sanchez has been booked into jail on multiple felony charges. Buckeye police said the agency will recommend another homicide charge against the suspect following the death on May 20.

According to Buckeye police, 19-year-old Antonio Tequida was also arrested in connection with the shooting.

Police said Tequida drove the shooting suspect, Michael Isiah Sanchez, to the scene of the shooting. Tequida then drove Sanchez to a friend’s house after the shooting to hide from the police.

Tequida was arrested at an Avondale home on May 17 and is facing charges of hindering prosecution.

Court documents said Tequida told police he was unaware of what Sanchez did with the firearm.

The department also revealed that a month before the shooting on April 13, police responded to a call where Montgomery reported being assaulted by Sanchez. She told police that Sanchez threatened her with a gun.

No arrest was made on this day.
