PHOENIX, Arizona — The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) launched the #LookBeforeYouLock campaign as a reminder to drivers to always check the backseat of their car before leaving and locking their vehicles.

Since 1990, more than 1,000 children have died in hot cars nationwide, according to ADHS. Officials say simply checking the back seat before walking away could save a life.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, reports that about 37 children a year die from heatstroke after being left or becoming trapped in a vehicle. During the summer, that averages about two children per week.

ADHS shared several steps people can take to prevent these tragedies:

  • Make a routine: Get in the habit of checking the back seat of your car every time you park whether your child is with you or not. Always be sure to look before you lock.
  • Put something in the back seat: Place something you need at your destination in the back seat so you will be sure to open the back door. For example: a cellphone, employee badge, a handbag, or another important item.
  • Never leave your child alone: A vehicle can reach a dangerous temperature in as little as 10 minutes, even on a relatively cool day. Parking in the shade or rolling a window does not prevent car deaths.
  • Be sure to communicate: If you have a change in routine, such as your partner or parent is dropping your child off at childcare, make sure you communicate to confirm the drop-off was made.

There are also technology-based reminders that can help:

  • Set an alarm with a distinct sound on your cell phone or computer calendar as a reminder to drop your child off at childcare.
  • Consider technology that alerts drivers to check the back seat.
  • Ask your babysitter or childcare provider to contact you if your child hasn’t arrived as scheduled.
