PHOENIX —  As of May 31, more than 132,000 traffic events have been recorded by Phoenix’s photo safety camera program, according to new data released by city officials.

The city reported that more than 132,000 events were captured by photo enforcement cameras operating within Phoenix city limits. Of those, approximately 17,600 resulted in mailed citations, while more than 13,000 generated other forms of legal notice.

The total number of citations and legal notices issued marks a significant decline from the more than 51,000 warning letters sent during the program’s initial 30-day grace period, when violations did not result in penalties.

The city’s network of 17 photo safety cameras is part of Phoenix’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries while supplementing enforcement efforts by the Phoenix Police Department.

Nine of the cameras were initially installed along corridors with a history of speed-related crashes. The remaining eight were placed in school zones with 15 mph speed limits.

With schools closed for the summer, city officials have relocated three of the school-zone cameras to new areas. The cameras are now operating along 7th Avenue between Indian School Road and Camelback Road, Missouri Avenue between 99th Avenue and 101st Avenue, and Chandler Boulevard between Desert Foothills Parkway and 6th Street.

Officials said those are the only camera relocations completed so far, but additional moves could occur throughout the summer as the city continues to adjust enforcement locations.
