Around 8:30 p.m., police were called to a shooting at the mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road.

Early information provided by callers described shots fired inside the mall and potential victims, police said.

Upon arrival, officers worked to secure the perimeter and the mall’s interior while shops either closed or went into lockdown, officials said.

Police said they located a 17-year-old male teen who was critically injured by gunfire. The teen was taken to the hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department and later died.

A second male teen, who is 16 years old, had a non-life-threatening injury. He was taken to the hospital and is recovering, police said.

Multiple people were detained, but none of them are suspected of being the shooter, police said.

The Phoenix Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the case.
