PHOENIX, Arizona — While most of us will enjoy a good barbeque, trip to visit family, event or parade honoring the fallen. The majority of grocery stores and restaurants will remain open, some with modified hours.

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25, and most government offices across the Valley will be closed, and regular operations will resume on Tuesday, May 26. 

Here is what’s closed

  • Federal, state, county, and city offices in the Phoenix metro area
  • Courts
  • Banks and Credit Unions
  • DMV/MVD offices
  • Public libraries in most Valley cities
  • Post offices: no regular mail delivery, self-service options are available in many retail lobbies when the post offices are closed.

Trash, Recycling and Bulk pick-up: Many cities suspend or delay by one day if your pickup falls on or after Memorial Day. Check your local city (Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale etc.)

Valley Metro bus and rail will operate on a Sunday schedule. There will be no RAPID and express bus service. Customer service and transit center windows will be closed.

  • Most major retailers and grocery stores (Costco is closed)
    • Bashas’
    • CVS
    • Fry’s Marketplace
    • Safeway
    • Walgreens
    • Walmart
  • Some restaurants and bars
  • Movie theaters and entertainment venues

Memorial Day honors U.S. military members who died in service. Ceremonies and events are scheduled across the Valley throughout the weekend.
